A. Be very careful with credit counseling agencies. There are good ones out there - and there are bad ones out there. Any that charges YOU the customer - is not a good deal. Then too there are those that have you send them your money and then you never know what happened to it. No one gets paid and you never get it back. The only one I can tell you for sure is legit is "Consumer Credit Counseling". It appears to be the most respected one in the credit industry. Know too that lenders do not have to abide with whatever a credit counseling agency tells you the creditor will do. PLUS - talk to the creditor first is a good idea. Explain to them that you are considering this option. You may find that your creditors will work with you to… [cont.]

Can anyone provide me with information on how to go about starting a non profit crisis center?
Q. I am wanting to start a crisis center for physically and emotionally distressed women and children. To provide counseling and be able to refer them to other places that can help them out as well. (ie. places to stay, food, clothing)

A. This page contains GREAT links on how to start a non profit business To get you started on the road to fund raising, I suggest you check out Foundation Center. They have trainings on how to start a non profit and various databases containing information on funding institutions. For detailed information on how to start a non profit, I suggest you read the following books: - Starting and Running a Nonprofit Organization -- by Joan M. Hummel - Starting and Running a Non-Profit Made Easy by Entrepreneur Press, David H. Bangs - Starting & Building A Nonprofit: A Practical Guide by Peri Pakroo

Know any good credit counseling service in the Seattle area?
Q. We need to consolidate, etc. I'm hoping for a local non-profit service. Any ideas?

A. Sorry, I'm not from the Seattle area, but you can go to www.bbb.org and do a search by 'type of business'. Just enter credit counseling, debt consolidation, etc, along with your zip code, and it will list the ones in your area. You can then click on the company names and you can see what kind of rating they have with the Better Business Bureau. To me, this is the best way to find a reputable, honest service.
